Breeding to Maintain and Improve with Each Generation.
Riptide Portuguese Water Dogs is owned by me, Melody Geltzer. I am in love with this fabulous breed. I am a member of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA), United Sunshine States Portuguese Water Dog Club (USSPWDC) a regional club serving the states of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. I participate in many AKC events and regional water camps with my dogs.
I cannot wait for you and your family to get to know this breed if it will be your first PWD or to continue on your PWD journey if getting another fabulous pwd!
If you are a return customer, as I am, then skip ahead to the questionnaire, but if this will be your first PWD, make sure to read below to educate yourself with the breed before finalizing your decision to be a part of the PWD world.
Before Getting a PWD Puppy Know That . . .
- The Portuguese Water Dog is a smart, fabulous, caring breed but is also mouthy, stubborn, independent thinking breed and is NOT for every home.
- They are working dogs and as such require a lot of attention to training and mental stimulation.
- They do best in homes that have at least one owner home most of the time and they thrive when they are involved in as many aspects of their humans’ lives as possible.
- We strongly suggest you review the www.pwdca.org (Portuguese Water Dog Club of America) site for information and education about this breed. Talk with other owners, breeders, groomers and instructors to get as much information as possible. Being educated about the breed is the best preparation for adding a new puppy,
- I breed with health, temperament, conformation and breed type as my top priorities with every breeding. When I have puppies, I don’t offer them on a “first come, first serve” basis. I match puppies to their families and our show puppies are chosen prior to any pet home placements. I do the best I can to choose the puppy I keep and choose the best puppy for each family. I do this by getting to know the potential families, watching the puppies from birth and through temperament and conformation testing by other qualified knowledgeable people.
- I make NO guarantees to the color puppy I will choose for you. I choose which puppy goes to which home between 7-9 weeks of age once temperament, structure and health evaluations are complete.
- I sell puppies on a limited registration with a mandatory spay/neuter contract *specific details in the contract* unless purchased under a show/performance/breeding contract. I have a clause in place in my contract that requires that at any time in the life of the puppy the owner is unable to keep him/her, the puppy must be returned to me. My desire is for the puppy to live a full life with the new family but if circumstances prevent this I require the dog be returned to me for the welfare of the dog and the reputation of my breeding program.
Want a Riptide Puppy?
There is no difference in price for gender, color or coat type. I do not ship puppies. You must be willing to pick your puppy up in person.
The deposit is not a guarantee of a puppy but a show of intent to purchase a puppy. There is a deposit of $500.00 via Zelle or check, payable to Melody Geltzer. I take a maximum of six applicants for the litter with an additional four on a waiting list. Things happen that someone just isn’t able to get the puppy, I understand that, so a waiting list is always a good idea.
Also, please know that all payments must be finalized a week before picking up your puppy. Incremental deposits may be made after the initial $500 deposit is cleared.
I prefer that deposits or all payments be made using the Zelle app.
Once the litter is confirmed through ultrasound at four weeks, you will be contacted to confirm. Thereafter, your deposit is not refundable. If for some reason, not enough puppies are available in the litter, the temperament of the puppies is not acceptable, or any other reason the breeder sees, your deposit will be returned in full.
If after researching the breed, you believe a Riptide Portuguese Water Dog puppy is the best choice for you, please complete the Puppy Questionnaire.
I have two questionnaires available here. The short form is if you have a casual interest and want more information before deciding. The long form is if you have made the decision to have a Riptide puppy and are ready to move forward on that path. Completing either form will alert me to your interest, whichever level it may be. Please text message me after the form is completed to arrange a conversation.
